About Tortoise
World Turtle Day is a global conservation movement founded in 2000 by American Tortoise Rescue, a nonprofit established in Malibu, California, in 1990 by Susan Tellem and Marshall Thompson. Celebrated each year on May 23, the initiative raises awareness of turtles and tortoises, their habitats, and the actions needed to protect them. Its reach now extends to more than 190 countries, building on American Tortoise Rescue’s work rescuing and rehabilitating these animals.
The organization offers practical resources for people who encounter turtles or are considering ownership, including an emergency guide, care information, and answers to common questions about species, habitats, and diet. Its website also provides free activities and toolkits for educators, families, zoos and aquariums, and rescue groups. Visitors can take part in conservation challenges, play Bunkle’s Bingo, find or host local events, and shop official merchandise. The site says purchases support turtle rescue and conservation efforts worldwide. Through these resources, events, and community participation, World Turtle Day encourages people to help turtles and tortoises thrive in healthy habitats.
