Towns County Historical Society is a community organization dedicated to keeping the history, culture, and heritage of Towns County, Georgia, alive. Through public programs, preservation work, research, and community partnerships, the Society helps residents and visitors learn about the people, places, and events that have shaped the county.
Its activities include monthly public meetings and presentations, historical exhibits, educational programs for schools and young people, and publications such as books, pamphlets, and newsletters. The Society also digitizes and preserves local documents, photographs, newspapers, and books, and records oral histories from longtime residents. Preservation initiatives support historic structures and landmarks, cemetery documentation and restoration, historical markers, and adaptive reuse of historic buildings.
Visitors can explore the Old Rock Jail museum, open on select Fridays and Saturdays, and the Presley Post Office, which offers tours during local festivals. The Berrong-Oakley House is currently under restoration. The Society welcomes members, volunteers, donors, and sponsors to help advance its work through research, events, education, fundraising, and hands-on preservation projects.
