TOXICROP is an international research and innovation project focused on cyanotoxins in irrigation water and their potential effects on agriculture. Funded through the European Union’s Horizon 2020 programme under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions Research and Innovation Staff Exchange scheme, the project ran from 2019 to 2022. Its consortium brought together partners from Portugal, Denmark, Spain, Morocco, Egypt, Colombia, Peru and Slovenia, including research institutions and organisations working on water and environmental issues.
The project investigated areas at risk of cyanotoxin occurrence in participating countries and examined how these toxins behave in crops, including the possibility of crop contamination. It also explored environmentally friendly, low-cost approaches to treating water and removing toxic cyanobacteria and cyanotoxins. Alongside this research, TOXICROP aimed to develop proposals for maximum cyanotoxin levels in irrigation water. Its work brought international partners together to assess agricultural risks and contribute research-based approaches to safer water use. TOXICROP is a collaborative research initiative rather than a commercial product or service provider.
