About Transandino
Its central subject is a brass model in 1:22. 5 scale, built for Spur IIm track, representing a 1908 articulated rack-and-adhesion locomotive used on Chile’s Transandine Railway. The original Maschinenfabrik Esslingen engines worked on a 1,000 mm mountain railway, negotiating rack sections with gradients of up to 80‰ and reaching a summit above 3,200 metres.
The site explains the locomotive’s distinctive design and shares historical research, including photographs, drawings and information gathered through field visits. Since neither original locomotive survives, the model is a carefully researched interpretation based on the sources that remain. Readers can follow the project through diary entries covering its frames, wheels, rack drive, running gear, cab, water tanks, fittings, painting and finishing work.
The website also features earlier model projects, a gallery, videos and updates from railway gatherings and exhibitions. It serves enthusiasts interested in large-scale model railways, steam locomotives, railway engineering and the history of the Transandine route
