The Organization for Transformative Works (OTW) is a fan-run U. S. nonprofit established in 2007 to serve fans and preserve the history of fanworks and fan culture.
It works to give fans greater control and ownership of their creations while ensuring that fanworks and fandom histories remain accessible. Supported entirely by donations, the organization provides several projects and services for fan communities. Archive of Our Own (AO3) is a noncommercial archive for transformative works across many fandoms, supported by open-source software developed by the OTW.
Fanlore is a wiki documenting the history of fanworks and fandoms. Through Open Doors, the OTW helps protect at-risk fan projects and archives, preserving works and cultural artifacts. Its Legal Advocacy team works to defend fanworks against commercial exploitation and legal challenges, and to inform fans about relevant legal developments.
The organization also publishes Transformative Works and Cultures, an international, peer-reviewed journal covering transformative works and fan communities. The OTW offers ways to participate through membership, volunteering, and donations
