慈山寺由李嘉誠先生發心興建。李先生自幼已受先輩薰陶，與佛教締結甚深法緣。1980年成立基金會更注入其所有資產三分之一，興醫辦學、救濟貧困，更以基金會為其「第三個兒子」，倡導嶄新奉獻文化。李先生早年興家創業的艱苦歷程，使他聚焦於推動一些真正能令世界變得更美好的項目，普澤社會大眾。李先生力求以出世之精神，做入世之事業。鑑於世變日亟，市民之精神及生活壓力沉重，遂動念興建慈山寺，拓清幽道場，以弘揚正法，淨化人心，推動佛學教育，方便大眾修學建智，並開展慈濟善業，利樂社群。他相信，人人心中都藏有一顆智慧寶珠，惟其久被塵勞封鎖，只須洗淨煩惱，光芒便會遍照大千世界。 慈山寺興建計劃自2003年起，歷逾十年，終告圓滿落成。慈山寺以漢傳佛教為本，致力發揚觀音菩薩慈悲、智慧與承擔之精神。其土地購置、建設資金，以及經常費用皆由基金會奉獻，至今累計捐款已達三十五億港元。2015年4月向公眾開放，歡迎各界人士以登記方式參訪。
