TwinShip Consortium

TwinShip is a Horizon Europe research project focused on accelerating the maritime sector’s digital and environmental transformation. It brings together maritime technology and service providers, ship designers and operators, classification societies, ports, software developers, and research and academic organizations. At the heart of the initiative is an open-source digital platform that combines maritime data with domain expertise, machine learning, and artificial intelligence. The platform incorporates a digital twin-enabled decision support system intended to help improve vessel operations and guide emissions-reduction decisions.

TwinShip applies its framework through four pilots: a Grimaldi RoRo vessel, a Stena RoPax vessel, a Stena chemical tanker, and a futuristic unmanned vessel concept. The project explores existing and emerging clean fuels and technologies, renewable energy, and unmanned shipping. Its stated goals are to reduce international shipping greenhouse gas emissions by 30–40% by 2030 and 80–90% by 2040, and to reach net zero by 2045, compared with 2008 levels. The project also shares updates, publications, work packages, deliverables, and information about its VesselAI platform and assets catalogue.
