Ubuntu MATE

Ubuntu MATE is a community-developed, Ubuntu-based operating system that integrates the MATE desktop environment. Presented as “for a retrospective future,” it combines a traditional desktop metaphor with a configurable interface, giving users ways to tailor their desktop layout and experience. The project describes the system as stable and easy to use, and aims to help people get the most from their computers.

Its modest hardware requirements make Ubuntu MATE suitable for modern workstations, single-board computers, and older machines. The project presents it as a way to make modern computers fast and older computers usable. Its website provides information about features, desktop layouts, and screenshots, alongside downloads and support resources. Users can also explore guides, frequently asked questions, community spaces, and opportunities to get involved, contribute funding, or visit the project’s emporium.

Ubuntu MATE is an official flavour of the Ubuntu family and is supported by sponsors and patrons. The brand is maintained by the Ubuntu MATE Team, with community participation central to its development and outreach.
