The Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art (UIMA) in Chicago, IL is dedicated to preserving and promoting contemporary art as a means of expression for both Ukrainian and American experiences. UIMA achieves this through exhibitions, concerts, readings, lectures, and films, all of which serve the cultural needs of the community and foster cultural understanding and diversity. Founded in 1971 by art collectors Dr.
Achilles and Vera Chreptowsky, as well as sculptors Konstantin Milonadis and Mychajlo Urban, UIMA emerged as an alternative exhibition venue for nationally and internationally recognized Ukrainian artists engaged with contemporary art. It showcased works by Canadian, Chicago, Ukrainian, Polish, and Lithuanian artists, as well as computer art, book art, fiber, and ceramics. Over its 40-year existence, UIMA has grown its permanent collection, which now includes notable artists such as Alexander Archipenko and Alexis Gritchenko, along with works by Ukrainian descent artists and Chicago artists.
Today, UIMA continues to host a wide range of exhibitions, events, and programs that connect an international network of artists, musicians, and writers with the local community. As part of its strategic goals, UIMA aims to develop an educational center for students pursuing careers in art and design. The institute also plays a leading role in developing West Town into a vibrant art destination and remains committed to community engagement and shaping the artistic legacy of the community and the city.
