About UK Antarctic Heritage Trust
UK Antarctic Heritage Trust (UKAHT) is a UK charity dedicated to protecting and preserving historic British sites along the Antarctic Peninsula. Established in 1993, the Trust cares for former bases built between the 1940s and 1970s, preserving buildings and stories that connect the Heroic Era of exploration with modern Antarctic science. Its work includes conserving and safeguarding sites such as Port Lockroy, Detaille Island and other historic locations, helping keep this heritage safe and accessible for future generations.
At Port Lockroy’s Base A, visitors can explore a polar heritage museum, observe the local penguin colony and visit the world’s southernmost post office during the austral summer. UKAHT also shares Antarctic history and conservation through educational activities, online content, webinars, events and virtual visits. The organisation offers several ways for the public to support its work, including donations, membership, fundraising, penguin adoption and online shopping. Through its news, blogs and events, UKAHT brings the stories of Antarctica’s historic places and people to audiences in the UK and around the world.
