The United Kingdom Butterfly Monitoring Scheme (UKBMS) is a long-running national programme that tracks butterfly populations and supports research into insect ecology. Established in 1976, it collects records from more than 3,000 sites each year, making its dataset an important resource for understanding changes in insect populations. Monitoring combines traditional butterfly transects with the Wider Countryside Butterfly Survey and targeted surveys, using established recording methods that volunteers can take part in.
UKBMS provides guidance, recording forms, survey methods, regional coordinator support and information about participating. Its website also shares the latest results, species and site data, research findings, publications and official statistics. Data requests are available, and the scheme offers resources for people interested in butterfly monitoring and conservation.
The scheme is organized and funded by Butterfly Conservation, the UK Centre for Ecology and Hydrology, the British Trust for Ornithology and the Joint Nature Conservation Committee. Its work depends on volunteer contributions, which help build a sustained picture of butterfly populations across the United Kingdom.
