About Úlfljótsvatn
Úlfljótsvatn Scouts and the Forestry Association have come together once again to showcase the harmonious relationship between scouting and forestry. This summer, they embarked on an exciting project that combines the humanist values of scouting with positive environmental initiatives. Their collaboration began with the creation of a shelter belt consisting of 400 trees and shrubs of various species to protect the camping area at the Úlfljótsvatn Scout and Adventure Centre.
Following this, they welcomed a group of French rover scouts who were eager to contribute to an environmental project that would have a positive impact on the Icelandic and international community. Together, they worked on maintaining and enhancing the accessibility of the older forest area and restoring biodiversity to a landscape that has suffered erosion over the years. The Scouts of Úlfljótsvatn Forestry Association led the project, while the Úlfljótsvatn Scout and Adventure Centre provided accommodation and the chance to interact with scouts from around the world.
The Icelandic Forestry Association offered guidance and expertise in forestry practices, emphasizing the importance of preserving healthy forests. The rover scouts demonstrated their skills and dedication throughout their stay, undertaking tasks such as tree thinning, trail creation, stone fire pit construction, gate replacement, and tree planting. This project not only provided them with a deeper understanding of nature, soil erosion, and forest restoration, but also fostered teamwork and collaboration.
The resulting path created by the scouts is now officially named the "Franski skátastígur" in gratitude for their valuable contributions. This successful collaboration has opened doors to future projects and ideas, including the establishment of an outdoor classroom and the renovation of a circular game house. The summer season will culminate with the planting of 2,500 birch trees as part of the Landgræðsluskógaverkefni project.
The future looks promising at Úlfljótsvatn, and we eagerly anticipate the continued partnership between scouts and foresters in creating a vibrant and sustainable environment
