The Ulster Local History Trust is a Northern Ireland charity established by the Federation for Ulster Local Studies to strengthen local historical work, particularly by voluntary groups, and to promote its value in society. The Trust views local history as closely connected to identity, community and understanding, and as a positive force in public life. It also supports the preservation and continued use of living heritage. Its work has included a key role in campaigning to retain and use townland names in Northern Ireland, alongside efforts to improve researchers’ access to public archives.
The Trust offers grants through its Local History Fund, including support for indexing, and publishes information about awarded grants and application forms. Its website also provides research resources, with links to primary sources, secondary texts and other relevant organisations. Visitors can explore conference information, proceedings and a gallery, as well as learn about the Trust’s patron, trustees and other funders.
