Cellar Door is the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s oldest undergraduate literary journal, established in 1973. Published annually in the spring, the magazine showcases poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction, and visual art by UNC undergraduate students. Its mission is to promote meaningful student writing and art while giving emerging creators a platform to share their work with the campus community and wider audience.
Cellar Door publishes in both print and online formats. Print editions are available free at locations across campus, including outside Davis Library, in the student union, and on the first floor of Greenlaw. Its website features original creative work alongside additional content, reviews, and interviews with writers and artists. The journal also invites submissions across its literary and artistic categories and runs the Future Fictions Contest. Over the years, its judges have included writers and poets such as Mark Strand, Téa Obreht, Randall Kenan, and Tony Hoagland. Through its magazine, digital features, and submission opportunities, Cellar Door celebrates undergraduate creativity at Carolina.
