Underground Heritage

Underground Heritage is an independent, boutique heritage consultancy led by its Director and Founder, Dr Madeline Shanahan. The practice uncovers and interprets the histories embedded in places, helping communities understand and celebrate their significance as environments change. Its work combines historical research, archaeology, placemaking, and engagement, with a senior expert involved throughout each project to provide continuity and accountability.

Services include historical archaeology, from assessment and excavation to interpretation and public engagement; heritage advice for complex projects; and interpretation and placemaking that bring layered histories and diverse voices into view. The consultancy also provides First Nations cultural heritage advice, histories, archaeology, cultural values assessment, and stakeholder engagement, with a focus on centring Aboriginal voices in the management of places. Additional services include community and stakeholder engagement, heritage studies, thematic histories, commissioned publications, expert witness reports, and Native Title research. Underground Heritage works with a trusted network of specialists to deliver comprehensive solutions. Its projects include interpretation planning, heritage advice and master planning, and archaeological projects with public programs and exhibitions.
