Understanding Animal Research (UAR) is a UK not-for-profit organisation dedicated to providing the public with factual, evidence-based information about the use of animals in scientific research. Funded by more than 150 life science organisations, including universities, research institutions, charities, pharmaceutical companies, learned societies and government agencies, UAR explains how and why animal research is conducted in medical, veterinary and environmental fields. Its resources cover research purposes, species, statistics, ethics, animal care and welfare, regulation, the 3Rs, alternatives, and the development of medical treatments.
UAR also addresses common questions and misconceptions through articles, factsheets, case studies, news and educational materials. To encourage openness, the organisation shares accounts from researchers and animal care staff and offers virtual tours of UK laboratory facilities. Its services include webinars and other events, teaching resources, a video and document library, a monthly news digest, and opportunities to request a speaker.
UAR aims to help people understand the scientific context, safeguards and debates surrounding animal research, which in the UK requires Home Office permission and is subject to regulation
