UNEARTHING THE MUSIC is a collaborative cultural and research project documenting experimental music-making and listening in European countries governed by dictatorial regimes between 1950 and 2000. Bringing together five organizations from Portugal, Latvia, Hungary, Romania, and Serbia, the project explores the people, sounds, and histories of creative musical resistance across the region. Its online database preserves and shares archival materials, including recordings, interviews, essays, photographs, videos, posters, and sheet music.
Visitors can explore the collection, listen to digitized studio and live recordings, and discover podcasts, radio programs, and related editorial projects. UNEARTHING THE MUSIC also organizes events and invites the public to contribute materials and knowledge that can enrich the archive. Its publications and shop feature books, compilation albums, and other merchandise, including a book on sonic resistance and a vinyl collection focused on the East German tape underground.
The project is organized by OUT. RA, with partner organizations Skaņu Mežs, MTA-BTK, Jumătatea plină, and Radio Belgrade 3, and is co-funded by the European Union’s Creative Europe Programme
