About African-Eurasian Waterbird Agreement
The Agreement on the Conservation of African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbirds (AEWA) is an intergovernmental treaty focused on protecting migratory waterbirds and their habitats across Africa, Europe, the Middle East, Central Asia, Greenland, and the Canadian Archipelago. Developed within the framework of the Convention on Migratory Species (CMS) and administered by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), AEWA unites countries and the global conservation community to establish coordinated conservation and management practices for these birds throughout their migratory range.
AEWA covers 255 bird species reliant on wetlands for breeding and migration. It spans from Canada to Africa, with 119 Range States involved. With three main bodies - Meeting of the Parties (MOP), Standing Committee (StC), and Technical Committee (TC), AEWA ensures active participation from Contracting Parties. The Action Plan focuses on species protection, habitat conservation, research, education, and emergency measures to safeguard these vital bird populations. Governed by international law, AEWA remains committed to ensuring the preservation of migratory waterbird populations and their crucial habitats.
