About UNESCO UK
The UK National Commission for UNESCO is an independent body and a constitutional part of the United Kingdom’s membership of UNESCO. It serves as the central hub for UNESCO-related matters in the UK, connecting people, places and organisations with UNESCO’s work in education, science, culture, and communication and information. The Commission supports a diverse network that includes Biosphere Reserves, Creative Cities, Global Geoparks, World Heritage Sites, Learning Cities, UNESCO Chairs and other recognised programmes.
Its work includes developing partnerships, sharing expertise and supporting initiatives that advance UNESCO values and contribute to the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Projects address issues such as climate change, heritage protection, inclusion and community collaboration. Examples include FutureScapes, a toolkit for place-based climate action; Local to Global, which connects UNESCO sites to share ideas and approaches; and a pilot using digital tools and artificial intelligence to help protect Roman archaeology at Vindolanda. The Commission also supports living heritage inventories and programmes for women and girls in science.
