United African Women

United African Women Organization (UAWO) is a community organization founded by women from Africa, the United States, and the Caribbean in Detroit, Michigan. It mobilizes women of African descent across Michigan, creating a support network that celebrates cultural expression and helps women and children pursue educational and professional goals. UAWO also promotes African cultural awareness among children and offers programs to educate the wider American community about African cultures.

Its services and activities include member networking, scholarships, tutoring for children and youth, community services, cultural enrichment, seminars and workshops, sewing classes, language arts, nutrition education, health and wellness support, and immigration services. The organization also raises funds for its projects and seeks support to respond to emergencies. Its Sowing for Our Girls campaign and scholarship opportunities reflect its focus on supporting young people’s education. Donations help sustain UAWO’s work, including assistance for homeless people, particularly residents of Freedom House in Detroit.
