United Spinal Association of Iowa is a nonprofit organization dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for people living with spinal cord injuries or disorders and other wheelchair users. It connects individuals across Iowa, along with their families, caregivers, and professionals, and encourages members to support one another in pursuing active, healthy lifestyles.
The chapter offers peer support and mentoring for people adjusting to life after a spinal cord injury or disorder. Peer mentors can meet individuals in hospitals, clinics, accessible community locations, or virtually, and the organization also provides virtual support groups. Members can borrow accessible recreation equipment, including gear for golf, handcycling, bowling, and kayaking.
Programs and activities include accessible bowling, social gatherings, pop-up events, and the IowAbility Fair, which highlights adapted recreation, sports, products, and services for people with physical disabilities. The chapter’s advocacy committee helps members learn about self-advocacy and engagement with policymakers. It also shares news through an email newsletter and social media, and hosts a private Facebook group where members can buy, sell, or trade disability-related equipment and supplies.
