About Upper Bay Budo Society
Upper Bay Budo Society is a martial arts school and community in Bel Air, Maryland, dedicated to building a society of safety through traditional Japanese budo. Its primary program is Aikido, a non-competitive practice open to students aged 11 and older, including beginners with no prior experience. Training supports practical self-defense awareness, physical fitness, discipline, mental clarity, and personal growth.
Committed students may also study Daito-ryu Aiki Jujutsu, the classical art from which Aikido was derived, through the society’s affiliation with Shobukan Dojo. The school additionally offers corporate and community safety workshops led by David Lewis Sensei. These sessions cover self-defense awareness, verbal de-escalation, and escape principles, and require no martial arts experience.
Led by experienced instructors David Lewis and Ted Howell, Upper Bay Budo Society combines martial arts instruction with respect for Japanese culture and tradition. The organization welcomes people seeking confidence, focus, balance, or strength, and offers a free trial class. It also hosts special events showcasing classical Japanese martial arts.
