The Urban Child Institute is a non-profit organization committed to the health and well-being of children in Memphis and Shelby County, Tennessee, from conception until the age of three. Founded in 1995, UCI emerged from Methodist Healthcare's acquisition of LeBonheur hospital. As a result of federal law, the organization was created to utilize the funds for the betterment of the entire community.
UCI's mission focuses on promoting education, health, and overall welfare for young children in Shelby County. Working in collaboration with LeBonheur Children's Hospital, University of Tennessee Health Science Center, and University of Memphis, UCI has adapted its approach over the years. Currently, the organization prioritizes children aged 0-8, with a particular emphasis on economically disadvantaged children.
Their goal is to ensure these children are prepared for kindergarten and can read proficiently by the end of third grade. UCI takes a holistic approach, partnering with various non-profit organizations in Memphis to create positive outcomes for children and their families. With an extensive archive of resources, including publications, videos, documents, and infographics, UCI provides valuable information on topics such as baby's brain development, parenting, child care, language and literacy.
