The Brussels Centre for Urban Studies (BCUS) is an interdisciplinary research and education centre based at Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB). Bringing together around 130 researchers across 12 research groups, it draws on expertise from the social sciences, humanities and engineering to explore urban issues. The Centre supports collaborative, interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research, and encourages engagement with communities and practitioners.
BCUS and its members offer urban studies education in English, Dutch and French. Opportunities range from master’s programmes and specialisation tracks to extracurricular training for EU staff, policy practitioners and civil society in Brussels. The Centre also provides research and professional training and supports educational programmes.
Beyond research and teaching, BCUS organizes and supports activities in Brussels and elsewhere, including public lectures, academic workshops, publications, exhibitions and excursions. Its events connect researchers and wider audiences through varied formats, while its broad network brings together expertise from multiple VUB faculties and departments. Through these activities, the Centre contributes to urban studies research, learning and public engagement.
