About Ursa Labs
Ursa Labs, built by Ursa Laboratories, develops open-source self-driving laboratory systems for materials science and chemistry research. Its platform helps researchers automate high-throughput materials characterization, electrochemistry, and autonomous experimentation. The core offering combines Cub hardware, CubOS software, and Zoo, a browser-based interface.
Cub and Cub XL are modified CNC gantry platforms designed for benchtop lab use, with options to suit different footprints and experimental throughput. Researchers can swap instrument heads to run workflows across 96-well plates. Supported equipment includes potentiostats, UV-Vis spectrometers, film-thickness instruments, pipettes, indenters, UV curing systems, and cameras; Raman spectroscopy is listed as in development.
CubOS is an open-source Python package that uses YAML configurations to define experiments and coordinate motion, instruments, data collection, and closed-loop optimization. Zoo provides a local web interface for editing configurations, calibrating gantries, validating motion, launching protocols, and viewing experiment data. Ursa Labs also invites researchers to explore its instruments, access its work on GitHub, and get in touch about their research needs.
