US Capitol Christmas Tree

The U. S. Capitol Christmas Tree is an annual holiday tradition organized by the USDA Forest Service, bringing a tree from one of the nation’s national forests to the West Lawn of the U.

S. Capitol. Known as the “People’s Tree,” the project celebrates America’s forests and connects communities through a cross-country journey and local events.

In 2026, the tree will come from Idaho’s Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forests and travel nearly 3,000 miles to Washington, D. C., with stops for celebrations and public visits along the route. The program works with nonprofit partner the Society of American Foresters, sponsors, contributing organizations, and local communities to coordinate the tour.

Visitors can follow the journey, attend events, view the tree and its companion trees, take photos, and learn about forest management and Christmas tree traditions. The website also provides event details, frequently asked questions, media information, and guidance on finding a real Christmas tree, including information about tree farms and permits for harvesting one from a national forest
