The USS Albacore Submarine and Museum in Portsmouth, NH is a brand that celebrates the history and innovation of submarines. As the third Navy vessel to bear its name, the USS Albacore holds a significant place in history as the first Navy-designed submarine with a true underwater hull of cylindrical shape. This groundbreaking design became the standard for today's submarines worldwide.

Built and maintained by the skilled engineers of the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, the USS Albacore served as a sea-going test platform from 1953 to 1972. Its teardrop-shaped hull was the prototype for the Navy's nuclear powered submarine force, making it the first submarine built specifically for underwater operations. With a motto of Forerunner of the Future, the USS Albacore's mission was experimental, providing the Navy with an engineering platform to evaluate systems and design features before implementing them in future submarine classes.
