About Utah FORGE
Utah FORGE is a cutting-edge research project focused on advancing Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS). Through innovative drilling and technology testing, Utah FORGE aims to identify a replicable, commercial pathway to EGS. The project includes a robust instrumentation, data collection, and data dissemination component to capture and share real-time data and activities occurring at the site.
The main focus of Utah FORGE is to strengthen our understanding of the key mechanisms controlling EGS success, particularly in initiating and sustaining fracture networks in basement rock formations. This knowledge will be used to design and test a methodology for developing large-scale, economically sustainable heat exchange systems. By reducing industry development risk and facilitating EGS commercialization, Utah FORGE aims to pave the way for a rigorous and reproducible approach.
R&D activities at Utah FORGE may involve innovative drilling techniques, reservoir stimulation techniques, well connectivity, and flow-testing efforts. Continuous monitoring of geophysical and geochemical signals, along with the use of dynamic reservoir models, will play an integral role in synthesizing, predicting, and verifying reservoir properties and performance. The project encourages open participation from the scientific and engineering community through competitive solicitations.
As advancements in EGS are made, R&D priorities will adapt and evolve to ensure the continued progress of Utah FORGE
