About Iguana Station
The Utila Iguana Conservation Project is a wildlife conservation initiative on Utila, a small island in Honduras. It focuses on protecting the endangered Utila spiny-tailed iguana, also known as the “swamper” and scientifically as Ctenosaura bakeri. This species is endemic to the island and lives in its mangrove forests, including a habitat described as an 8 km² area. The project’s work aims to help ensure the iguana’s survival through practical conservation efforts.
The project welcomes volunteers who want to assist with protecting the species and offers opportunities to book a volunteer placement and learn more about taking part. Visitors can also visit the Iguana Station, located a short walk from Utila Town’s main road, and explore its gallery and other information about the project. The site describes the station as an important place to visit on Utila and notes that The Guardian included it among its top ten places to volunteer for endangered wildlife conservation.
