UW Rugby

UW Rugby is an underwater rugby club introducing players to an unusual three-dimensional ball sport played beneath the surface. The game brings together two teams of six in the pool and combines elements of rugby, basketball and water polo. Players use their hands to carry a round ball and score by placing it in a basket underwater; substitutes wait poolside and can replace players during play.

The club shares information about the sport’s rules, history and links, and welcomes newcomers who want to try a training session. Sessions are listed at swimming pools including Slovnaft and Iuventa. Participants need a mask, snorkel, fins, swimwear and a towel; loan equipment may be arranged in advance by contacting the club.

Beginners are encouraged to come even if unsure of their abilities. Suggested basic skills include diving to four metres, swimming 20 metres underwater and holding one’s breath for 30 seconds. The Slovak team participated in the 2019 world championships in Graz, Austria
