About Uwezo Tanzania
Uwezo Tanzania is a Non-Governmental Organization dedicated to improving literacy and numeracy competencies among children in Tanzania. Through their innovative, citizen-driven, and public accountability approach, Uwezo aims to bring about social change and create a society where all children are learning and realizing their full potential. Uwezo, meaning capability in Kiswahili, was introduced in 2009 to bridge the learning assessment gap and generate valuable information on children's literacy and numeracy.
Their assessments involve evaluating children aged 6-16 years to establish their actual competencies in basic literacy and numeracy. In addition, Uwezo engages with communities, leaders, and local volunteers through participatory approaches to stimulate discussions about quality education and related challenges. They also implement the Kijiji Changu (My village) initiative, which focuses on improving learning outcomes within specific villages.
With a dedicated team and strong partnerships with various organizations, Uwezo is committed to driving change through assessment, research, innovation, partnerships, and advocacy. Their ultimate goal is to create a society where every child has the opportunity to learn and thrive
