Orval Salton, descendente de imigrantes italianos, concluiu seus estudos em Enologia em Mendoza, Argentina, em 1960. Após retornar ao Brasil, ministrou aulas de enologia e trabalhou na área por 23 anos. Em 1978, adquiriu uma propriedade de 24 hectares em Pinto Bandeira, Rio Grande do Sul, onde cultivou sua primeira variedade vinífera, a Cabernet Franc. As obras iniciaram em 1991 e, em 1997, fundou oficialmente a Estabelecimento Vinícola Valmarino LTDA, juntamente com seus filhos Marco Antônio, Guilherme e Rodrigo.
