Virginia Mental Health Counselors Association

Virginia Mental Health Counselors Association (VAMHCA) is the statewide professional association for mental health counselors and others working in or preparing to enter Virginia’s counseling profession. Formerly Northern Virginia Licensed Professional Counselors (NVLPC), the organization adopted its current name in January 2025 to reflect its statewide role. Founded in 1986, VAMHCA is a state chapter of the American Mental Health Counselors Association (AMHCA), though AMHCA membership is not required to join.

VAMHCA serves Licensed Professional Counselors, residents in counseling, students, and professionals in related fields, including marriage and family and substance abuse services. Its work advances counseling through education, advocacy, and collaboration, with a focus on professional growth and a stronger voice in policy matters such as Medicare coverage and licensure portability.

Members and prospective counselors can access professional development events, continuing education programs, a therapist and supervisor finder, career resources, and networking opportunities. Monthly virtual support groups help residents and students navigate licensure requirements, supervision, and exam preparation. VAMHCA also offers member benefits, newsletters, and volunteer opportunities.
