About Assalam Community Foundation
Vassalam. org is a brand that focuses on promoting sustainable development and empowering communities in Africa. They operate in three main areas: formal education for children, vocational training for women, and social initiatives.
Their flagship project, Assalam International School, provides high-quality education to local students and aims to train future scientists, managers, craftsmen, and artisans of Africa. The school is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, experienced teaching staff, and resources to support children's psychological and mental development. Assalam Children's University offers alternative education for African children, covering diverse subjects such as science, computers, coding, art, drama, language, and sports.
The university aims to develop the abilities and intelligence of children with superior potential. Assalam also operates vocational schools, including training in agriculture and animal husbandry, carpentry, sewing and design, cookery, and tourism-hotel management. The vocational training focuses on empowering orphan mothers and providing them with skills and internship opportunities.
To ensure wider access to education, Assalam has launched the Assalam Mobile Library, which brings books, teachers, volunteers, and art, science, and sports activities to various villages in Zanzibar. In line with their commitment to self-sufficiency, Vassalam. org has established KangaAfrica, a social enterprise brand that sells products created by orphan mothers who have received sewing and design education.
KangaAfrica promotes economic empowerment and sustainable livelihoods for these women. Vassalam. org also offers volunteer tourism opportunities through its MamaAfrica program, inviting volunteers from around the world to contribute to their projects in Zanzibar.
Accommodation fees from volunteer tourists support the foundation's initiatives. The Assalam campus, known as Ecovilla Zanzibar, is designed as a sustainable eco-village. It accommodates volunteers and guests who share the principles of permaculture and live in harmony with nature.
The campus generates some income by renting rooms to volunteers and foreigners when there is demand. CafeAfrica&Shops and GaleriAfrica serve as platforms where social entrepreneurial products of the foundation are sold. All profits from these shops are used to support vocational training centers, schools, and other social development projects.
Despite their focus on social entrepreneurship, Vassalam. org also undertakes humanitarian aid projects. They have implemented various initiatives, including the distribution of hygiene kits, masks, and soap, along with aid for Ramadan, Qurban, stationery, zakat, food, water wells, home repairs, weddings, and clothing.
Assalam Youth Challenge is an annual competition where young people come up with creative solutions to address challenges in Africa. Winners receive support from Assalam to implement their projects in Zanzibar. Overall, Vassalam.
