About VCCD
The Vermilion County Conservation District (VCCD) is a public conservation organization established in 1966 by referendum vote in Vermilion County, Illinois. Located near the Indiana state line, the district manages four county parks: Forest Glen Preserve, Kennekuk County Park, Lake Vermilion County Park, and Heron County Park. Its headquarters are at Kennekuk County Park in Danville.
VCCD offers opportunities to explore local nature and history through recreational areas, trails, wetlands, prairies, lakes, native plant resources, and historic sites. Visitors can enjoy activities such as hiking, camping, archery deer hunting, and use of park shelters, which can be reserved by contacting the district before paying applicable fees online. The organization also supports conservation education, summer camp programs, wildlife initiatives, an animal ambassador program, and the Vermilion RiverWatch. Special events include the River to Rail Ride, a Revolutionary War reenactment, and Pioneer Craft Day. Additional programs and resources include forestry research, an arboretum, a herb garden, and the Living Memorial Tree Program.
