About VCMI
VCMI is a leading multi-stakeholder platform that drives credible participation in voluntary carbon markets. As the Voluntary Carbon Markets Integrity Initiative, their goal is to ensure high-integrity voluntary carbon markets that contribute to the objectives of the Paris Agreement while benefiting people and the planet. This international non-profit organization collaborates with various stakeholders including civil society, the private sector, Indigenous Peoples, and governments to foster high-integrity voluntary carbon markets.
They work towards a shared vision where these markets make a meaningful contribution to climate action and support the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. On the demand-side, VCMI provides the Claims Code of Practice, which enables companies to make credible climate claims by following a rulebook on the voluntary use of carbon credits. This helps build trust and confidence in how companies engage with voluntary carbon markets.
On the supply-side, VCMI offers the VCM Access Strategy Toolkit, which guides countries on how to engage in high-integrity voluntary carbon markets to support national climate and economic prosperity. The organization operates under a governance structure that ensures diverse stakeholder participation and includes a secretariat, steering committee, expert advisory group, and country contact group. In addition, VCMI values ethics and transparency, as demonstrated by their Code of Conduct which sets high standards for ethical conduct and conflict of interest management.
VCMI is an independent non-profit organization and has received co-funding from prominent foundations and organizations like the Children's Investment Fund Foundation, Ballmer Group, Bezos Earth Fund, Google LLC, and the UK Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy. With their mission to enable high-integrity voluntary carbon markets, VCMI is driving the transition to ambitious climate policies and regulations, supporting a just transition, and contributing to a world on track for 1. 5 degrees and net-zero emissions by mid-century
