Seit 1976 unterliegt Distanzreiten und -fahren in Deutschland dem Verein Deutscher Distanzreiter und -fahrer e.V. Auf rund 150 Veranstaltungen mit mehr als 400 Wettbewerben starten jährlich über 5.000 Teilnehmer auf den unterschiedlichsten Streckenlängen. Der Grundsatz „Alle Reiter, alle Fahrer, alle Pferde“ wird groß geschrieben. Zugelassen sind Pferde aller Rassen, Farben, Formen und Größen, ganz egal, ob mit oder ohne Abstammungsnachweis, sofern sie gesund sind. Das Mindestalter für den Einstieg beträgt fünf Jahre, auf längeren Strecken dürfen erst ausgewachsene Pferde starten. Jedes gesunde und regelmäßig im Gelände gerittene Pferd ist in der Lage, einen Distanzritt zu absolvieren. Als Anschluss Verband der FN hat sich der Verein Deutscher Distanzreiter und -fahrer e.V. der Förderung pferdegerechter Leistungen im Distanzsport verschrieben.

The Verein Deutscher Distanzreiter und -fahrer e.V. (VDD), established in 1976, is the premier organization for endurance riding and driving in Germany.
