The VDST, the German Underwater Sports Association, presents diving as more than a sport, combining underwater exploration, physical activity, education and environmental engagement. It supports a nationwide community of clubs, regional associations, dive centres and schools, and offers pathways for people discovering diving as well as experienced divers and instructors.

Its activities include recreational and freediving courses, advanced and specialty training, rebreather and mixed-gas diving, and programs for children and people with disabilities. Members can explore underwater photography, diving with children, travel diving, conservation projects and citizen science. The association also promotes competitive disciplines such as finswimming, orienteering, underwater hockey and underwater rugby, alongside performance awards and events.

For instructors, coaches and club volunteers, the VDST provides licensing, examinations, continuing education, online learning and resources for club administration. It publishes the VDST sporttaucher magazine and educational content on environmental knowledge, medicine, swimming and snorkelling. Membership includes diving accident, liability, legal protection and general overseas medical insurance, plus access to a medical emergency hotline.
