Founded by Sharon Kay Doherty, the brand was born out of her own frustration with the lack of authentic salon grooming formulas for dogs in 1976. Existing products either contained oil or lanolin, which had negative side effects on the hair and skin of dogs, or were human hair products that caused skin irritation.

In 1992, Sharon partnered with her nephew, David, who had a background as a research chemist in the personal care industry. Together, they developed genuine salon grooming formulas specifically for dogs, which are now known as Vellus Products. Their dedication to using only superior cosmetic grade ingredients has made a significant difference.
