About Venice Canals LA
Venice Canal Historic District is a historic residential neighborhood in Venice, Los Angeles, California, created in 1905 by developer Abbot Kinney as part of his “Venice of America” seaside resort. Six canals remain from the original network, bordered by quiet pedestrian paths, private arched bridges, and homes that range from early bungalows and Mediterranean Revival architecture to contemporary designs. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982, the district was restored in the early 1990s and offers visitors a distinctive glimpse of Los Angeles history.
The canals are free to visit and accessible 24 hours a day. Visitors can stroll beside the water, admire the architecture and gardens, watch birds and other wildlife, and take photographs of the bridges and tranquil views. The neighborhood is a short walk from Venice Beach, making it a peaceful addition to a coastal visit. Street parking is available nearby but limited and subject to posted restrictions; public transport, biking, and walking are alternatives.
