Vetik OÜ is a brand that specializes in the development of natural algae-based red colorants for cosmetics. Unlike traditional colorants used in food and cosmetics, which can be harmful to health and cause allergic reactions, brain damage, and even cancer, Vetik offers a safe and innovative solution.

Their red colorant, known as Phycoerythrin, exhibits a range of colors from dark red to pink and is derived from the red seaweed Furcellaria lumbricalis. This colorant is not only antioxidant-rich but also possesses several biological activities, such as antidiabetic, antitumoral, immunosuppressive, and antihypertensive properties. In addition to their red colorant, Vetik is also developing the valorization of the entire seaweed biomass for cosmetics and other industries, including the production of various seaweed extracts.

Existing options, such as petroleum-based dyes, carmine derived from bugs, and synthetic astaxanthin, either lack health benefits or have potential allergenic or health concerns.

Vetik has already achieved significant milestones, including the founding of the company, pilot-scale extraction of Phycoerythrin, and the development of a scalable biorefinery concept. Their production capacity, once fully scaled-up, could reach up to 1000 tons of 0. 1% color solution using their current seaweed source.
