Villa San Michele is a historic museum and cultural destination in Anacapri, Capri, created by Swedish physician and author Axel Munthe in the early 20th century. Its architecture, rooms and collections reflect Munthe’s life and interests, while the surrounding garden offers views across the island and sea. The garden, recognised as Italy’s most beautiful private park, features seasonal flowers, a wisteria-covered colonnade, cypress avenue and the celebrated Sphinx terrace.
Visitors can explore the museum’s collection of Roman, Etruscan and Egyptian art, including a 3,200-year-old sphinx, and learn about Munthe, the villa’s history and its connection to Queen Victoria of Sweden. A permanent exhibition is dedicated to Marchesa Casati. The estate also encompasses Mount Barbarossa and its historic castle, where guided visits introduce the site’s role as a sanctuary for migratory birds.
Villa San Michele presents summer cultural events, including concerts, and offers guided and virtual tours, a museum app and school visits.
