VIRO-FLOW is a European research and training project focused on accelerating the discovery of new inhibitors of hepatitis B virus (HBV). Its approach combines continuous-flow chemistry with in vitro microfluidic bioassays, bringing together methods designed to support faster, more efficient investigation of potential antiviral compounds. The project also seeks to develop innovative methodologies for producing compounds with antiviral activity and to encourage the transfer of knowledge and technology between research and industry.
Funded through the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme, VIRO-FLOW operates as an international training network for three early-stage researchers. Participants receive advanced training in drug discovery and enabling technologies, with guidance from experts in anti-infective therapeutics, virology, bacteriology and flow chemistry. The network involves AiCuris, a pharmaceutical company, and the Institute of Chemical Research of Catalonia (ICIQ), whose work includes catalysis and sustainable chemistry. At ICIQ, researchers are integrated into the Pericàs Laboratory and the ERTFLOW technology development unit.
