Students at VIU have been organized through the Students' Union since 1969. Realizing the importance of having a voice on campus, they formed an institution-wide organization to represent their interests. Since then, VIUSU has been providing students with advocacy, services, and events that would not exist without a strong student-run organization that is independent from VIU and government.

About VIUSU
VIU Students' Union, located in Nanaimo, BC, has been operating since 1969, representing the voice and interests of students at Vancouver Island University. As an institution-wide organization, they provide advocacy, services, and events that are independent from both VIU and the government. With a focus on student empowerment and collective action, VIUSU aims to bring about meaningful change on campus.
Their services include advocacy campaigns, student representation, and governing documents. Students can also stay informed about community updates, campus life, and events through their website. The Students' Union Pub offers a social gathering place for students, while the health and dental benefits plan provides coverage for prescriptions, dental care, and other medical expenses.
VIUSU also supports students in finding housing options near the campus through dedicated resources. Additionally, they offer grant funding for various purposes such as conference attendance, club events, and educational activities/initiatives. By joining VIU Students' Union, all students become members and gain access to discounts, student grants, and services tailored to their needs.
For inquiries or assistance, students can contact them via email or phone during office hours. The Students' Union acknowledges and appreciates the traditional lands of the Snuneymuxw, Quw’utsun, Snaw-naw-as, Qualicum First Nations, and Tla'amin Nation, on which they operate
