About VolcanicKED
VolcanicKED is a Christchurch-based learning company offering education and discovery experiences focused on the natural environments of Aotearoa New Zealand. Founded and led by earth scientist Sam Hampton, PhD, the company draws on more than 15 years of teaching and learning experience in the Earth sciences. Its work encourages learners and visitors to explore the landscapes and geology of the country, with a particular focus on Banks Peninsula and Canterbury.
VolcanicKED provides field and classroom learning in geology and geography, including guided experiences, tours, and education beyond the classroom. Activities for local schools have included identifying rocks, nature walks on the Port Hills, and creating erupting sand volcanoes. The company also partners with Field-Based STEM to support professional learning and development through field-based education.
Its projects include co-developing the University of Canterbury’s Foundational Field Skills for Earth and Environmental Sciences online course, hosted on edX, and researching, designing, and consulting on interpretive geosites for Te Pātaka o Rākaihautū Banks Peninsula Geopark.
