In ihrer Geschichte hat die Volksbühne künstlerische Grenzen in allen Disziplinen wie Schauspiel, Regie, Bühne, Kostüm, Video, Licht, bildende Kunst, Musik, bis in alle Gewerke hinein abgesteckt und gesprengt. Geschichte und Ästhetik des Hauses sind geprägt von der Erfindung neuer Theaterpraktiken, der Anwendung filmischer Mittel und einer radikalen Neudefinierung des künstlerischen Raums. Tradition und deren Neugestaltung, das ist alles die Volksbühne, die im Ensemble- und Repertoirebetrieb neben Schauspiel und Tanz auch Musik, Performance, Film und Diskurs in den Fokus nimmt. Von der Spielzeit 2021/22 bis Februar 2024 war der Autor und Regisseur René Pollesch Intendant der Volksbühne am Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz.
