Vrijmetselarij

The Order of Freemasons under the Grand East of the Netherlands connects Masonic lodges in the Netherlands and abroad through a tradition of fellowship and personal development. Established in 1756, it represents a movement with Dutch roots dating to 1734, when the country’s first lodge was founded in The Hague. The Order describes Freemasonry as a way to explore life’s questions, develop oneself and support others alongside people who value independent thought, tolerance and open discussion. Its approach emphasizes freedom of belief and dialogue rather than imposed dogma.

The organization introduces the public to Freemasonry through open evenings, public events and the Day of Freemasonry, where visitors can learn about or experience a lodge. It also shares information through videos, brochures and magazines, and explains how interested people can explore becoming Freemasons. In The Hague, the Freemasonry Museum houses the Order’s library, historical archive and museum collection. Visitors can join tours and view exhibitions from Wednesday to Sunday, while research at the Study Centre is available by appointment.
