Vogelwerkgroep Alkmaar en Omstreken is a birdwatching association for people who share an interest in birds and nature. With more than 300 members, the group brings local birders together to learn, take part in activities and support bird conservation. Its programme includes excursions, monthly members’ walks, lectures and activities for young people. Those interested in joining can try a members’ walk before becoming a member.

The association also contributes to gathering knowledge about birds and nature in its area. Its publications help members and readers stay informed about research, observations and local activities. The quarterly magazine De Kleine Alk features research findings, excursion and travel reports, upcoming activities, bird observations and a regular column. The group’s newsletter, Gevleugeld Nieuws, shares event announcements, calls for participation, photographs and notable bird sightings or behaviour. Its website also provides publications by members and information about bird-related topics in the local area, along with annual reports. For visitors interested in peregrine falcons, the group directs them to a separate live camera website.
