Urhobo Historical Society, established on August 28, 1999, in New York City, is dedicated to preserving and promoting the rich history and culture of the Urhobo people. Founded by Professor Peter P. Ekeh and a group of 25 founding members, the organization serves as a vital resource for those interested in Urhobo heritage. Its primary mission encompasses a range of activities, including an internet-based platform that provides information on Urhobo history and culture, as well as the publication of books and materials related to these subjects.
The society also organizes annual conferences, known as UHS Annual Conferences, fostering a space for scholarly interaction and cultural exchange. In 2014, Urhobo Historical Society expanded its commitment by relocating its headquarters to Urhoboland and establishing the Urhobo Historical Society Endowment Fund. This fund plays a key role in financing research and development projects within the community. Through these initiatives, Urhobo Historical Society actively supports the Urhobo people and their cultural legacy.
