The museum showcases a diverse range of exhibitions and events, immersing visitors in the fascinating stories of the region and beyond. With 13 galleries hosting over 25 new exhibitions and 100 public events each year, there is always something new to discover.
Highlights of the museum include the majestic war waka Te Winika, interactive science galleries for children, and a rich blend of artworks on display. One of the museum's most significant events is the National Contemporary Art Award, displaying the best of New Zealand's contemporary art scene. Opened in 1987, the museum's striking architecture was designed by the renowned Ivan Mercep, who also designed New Zealand's national museum, Te Papa.
